RT Photos +West Coast Event!

So before I launch into just how awesome the Romantic Times Conference was, I have a couple of announcements.

1. I will be back in Chicago in two weeks (4/30/12-5/1/12) for the International Reading Association Conference. I’ll be doing a podcast, talking on a panel (about super cool things, I’m sure…) and signing copies of ARTICLE 5! Kendare Blake (Anna Dressed in Blood – have you read it? It’s amazing), as well as other Tor authors will be there. So excited.

2. I will be in Reno, Nevada, my home town, in May! Sundance Books and Music – one of the staples of my youth – will be hosting an ARTICLE 5 reading/signing with yours truly on Friday, 5/11/12 from 6:30PM to 8:00PM. I hope you can make it! For more information, click here.

3. Have you ever seen an Australian copy of ARTICLE 5? Well, this is what it looks like.

Thank you Murdoch Books! Thank you Australia!

So…Romantic Times…

It was a trip. Seriously. It was so much fun! I mean, where else can you be inundated with postcards of naked men (and women), be given lube and paddles for audience participation, or go to lectures like:

  • Heartthrobs and Heartbreaks
  • YA Worldbuilding
  • Great Thriller Villains
  • Dystopian Delight: Making the Apocalypse Bad to the Bone (lol)
  • Kiss Me, Kill Me: Writing Action Scenes
  • The Ins and Outs of Sexual Tension, and
  • Sex Scenes They Won’t Skip (ha!)

I got to meet (in person) many of my email friends in the Apocalypsies (Pictured below are Zoraida Cordova -VICIOUS DEEP, out in May 2012, and J.A. Souders – who I already knew because we share our fabulous editor, but anyway – RENEGADE, out in November 2012, and Liz Czukas, who’s book will be out in 2013!).

As well as some of my heroes, including Stephanie Perkins (who is like, the coolest girl ever), and my new friend Carrie Ryan, author of THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH.

(Look at how much fun we’re having!)

I also met the nicest lady in the elevator – we chatted about all sorts of things as we stopped from floor to floor – and then I looked down and realized her name badge said Sue Grafton and I pretty much peed all over myself. Not really, but I might as well have. It seemed totally appropriate to yell out: “OMG I HAD NO IDEA I WAS TALKING TO SUE GRAFTON.” She was very nice about the whole ordeal.

Best part? The A5 team was together for the first time ever! My agent AND my editor! I had so much fun spending time with them. Wish we all lived closer and could do this more often. Here’s me with Melissa Frain, editor extraordinaire, at the signing (where, btw, I sold out of copies of ARTICLE 5!).

Thank you to everyone who came and introduced themselves. It was a humbling experience indeed to be placed amongst such prolific writers, and amazing getting to hear your favorite Chase and Ember scenes!

Finally, I didn’t know this before I went, but did you know they give you FREE BOOKS at conferences? REALLY! I got a ton, and then realized, oh crap, how am I going to get these home?

Hope you have a great week. I’ve got to get back to edits on Book 2! See you soon!

  1. I so wanted to go to that conference but didn’t hear about it in time, maybe next year. But it looked like you had a great time! Great pictures and srsly I would have died in the elevator if I were you lol.

You also got Bitterblue srsly so jealous right now lol… I’m glad you had fun, one of my friends went and she came back and told me you were so nice and I was like yep I already knew that lol.

How is it being on panels? I’m getting ready to do a few at Fandom Fest in Louisville and I’m a nervous wreck lol.

So glad you had fun! Great post

I had a GREAT time! So sorry you couldn’t make it Ali. I highly recommend for next year if you get the chance.
BITTERBLUE! I’ve been dying to read this one forever! Of course, I have put myself on a READ NOTHING rule until I finish edits, but we’ll see how that goes. So many delicious looking books are sitting on my shelf right now…so tempting…so very tempting…
You know, I haven’t actually done a panel yet – I just did a signing at RT. But I attended lots of panels and they were great. I’m sure you’ll do swimmingly. Wish I was going to Louisville for Fandom Fest! That sounds fun! (And of course, Louisville is one of my fave places anyway.)
      Have a great day Ali,

  2. Can’t wait to see you! I’m so excited you’re coming to Reno. See you on the 11th at Sundance. It may be filled with Jazzercise folks!

AHHHHH! So cool! First the authors!!! I love Sue Grafton and I just read one of Stephanie Perkins’ books :) How fun! AND then all the free books…wow. That must be like reading heaven ;)

  4. Where were you when I was there???? I rolled in at 6pm on Wednesday for the YA Sleepover, and I left by 8am on Thursday for another conference, but I LOOKED for you!!!

    : (

DANG IT! I so wanted to hang out with you Anne! I couldn’t make it to the YA sleepover because of another engagement. I’m so bummed I missed you.

In better news – I heard a certain ARC is headed my way…cannot wait to read your book!

  5. Terri Bynum says:

Hi Kristen, I love love love Article 5! I am not a young adult, I’m 45 & I’m not ashamed to admit it!! Please Please come to Providence for a book signing! After reading The Hunger Games, I discovered that there are so many excellent Dystopian novels out there. Yours is my FAVORITE so far & I’ve read quite a few!

Also, I know that Article 5 just came out in January, but since I’m almost finished with it, when is the 2nd installment going to be released? An approximation is fine.

Thank you for rocking it the way that you do!

    Terri B.
