Surviving Revisionland

This week I’m out and about again! Come find me at Brave New Words, a blog for young adult dystopian and post-apocalyptic debut authors. I’m writing on SURVIVING REVISIONLAND, a place so TREACHEROUS and FOUL itwill likely SUCK OUT YOUR VERY SOUL.

(Does my use of CAPS imply how ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL THIS INFORMATION IS TO YOUR LIFE? I hope so.)

And (ta-da!) next week (October 2-8) begins MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK! A time in which people all around the country honor the strength and resilience of our friends, peers, and family members living with the symptoms of a mental illness.

Mental health is an important topic to me (or rather, an IMPORTANT topic to me). It’s something we all need to take care of and something we should all be paying attention to – you’d go to the doctor for a sinus infection, wouldn’t you? Why not for a panic attack? Why is it so hard to talk about things like depression, and anxiety, and suicide? Because of one dangerous little six letter word: STIGMA.*

Stigma, in my humble opinion, comes from ignorance, which simply comes from not knowing. So, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, and to combat the stigma that prevents too many people from seeking help, all next week I will be posting information on mental health issues and agencies that offer help.

Come back and visit! You never know when this information can help you or someone you care about!

*Ok, there are a lot of reasons why it’s hard to talk about those things, but stigma certainly doesn’t make it any easier.
