Hello Charter Members,

I’m giving away an arc of METALTOWN! I’m excited to share it, but first, I need to say something.

So much has happened since the last newsletter. Our landscape has changed in an irreversible way, again. The more I thought about Orlando, the more I tried to understand it, the more powerless I felt. The more my fear intensified. The more I wanted to take my family, and friends, and everyone I love, and hide.

But I couldn’t hide, because I can’t hide all of us, and what happened could have happened to any of us. We are all important, special, beautiful people who have every right to a shot at a fair, just life.

The real truth is I don’t want to hide. I just want this to stop.

I want to live in a world of peace, and love, and like anything else, if I want to see those things, I need to show those things. I need to be like the characters in the books I write. Like Colin, and Ty, and Lena in METALTOWN. I need make a conscious choice, every day, to fight hate by demonstrating love.

It’s scary as hell, but I’m going to do it. Even in the face of hate.

Pressing back means standing up for the things that matter to you. It means saying the things that need to be said, or holding quiet when silence is stronger. PRESSING BACK is about defending the things you believe in.

I press back for love. Today, and every day.

Speaking of love…about that advance copy of METALTOWN…

Colin, Ty, and Lena Press Back against the injustice and danger they experience at the factory where they work in Metaltown. They fight back for their rights, basic human rights, and rally outside factory with signs and chants to spread the word of what’s going on inside.

To be entered for a chance to win this copy of METALTOWN, I want you to create a strike slogan or rallying cry for the Metaltown Charter (What’s a charter? Read about it HERE.)

These can be serious, or silly, or funny, or outrageous. We all need reasons to laugh, so go crazy, people. Just please keep them (decently) clean, and not hurtful. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a look at THIS or THIS.

Here are some of my brilliant shining examples:

I put the ME in METALTOWN!

Ty! Ty! She’s our girl! If she can’t do it, I’m gonna hurl!

I eat pigeon! I eat rat! The boss and the foreman can suck on that!

(Clearly, I am very good at this.)

Post your answer on social media using #PRESSBACK and/or #METALTOWN, make sure to tag me, too (@kris10writes on Twitter and Instagram, Kristen Simmons on Facebook) to be entered for a chance to win. This contest closes Friday, July 15th. Winners are chosen at random. Entries may appear in next newsletter.

I have one arc, but I’ll send Metaltown buttons and temporary tattoos to 5 runners up!

IMG_5186Let’s do this, guys. Spread happiness. Press Back for love.
